Rhythm
Rhythm is the heartbeat of music and a simple, accessible way to start playing with rhythm is by thinking in terms of Short (S) and Long (L). This foundational approach can help you feel the pulse of your music without over complicating things. If you have a drum handy, use it to explore these patterns, but even tapping a tabletop or your lap with your hand will work perfectly. The key is to make rhythm fun and approachable.
Here are a few rhythm patterns to get you started:
-
S-S-L
-
S-S-S-L
-
S-S-S-S-L
Take your time experimenting with these patterns. Don't be afraid to create your own combinations—your rhythm is uniquely yours! Once you're comfortable tapping out a rhythm, pick up your flute and play the same pattern using a single note. Start slow and steady, letting the rhythm flow naturally.

When you're ready, take it a step further: assign one note to S and a different note to L. This variation will not only add interest to your rhythm but also help you develop finger coordination and melodic phrasing.

Additionally, explore the wonderful playlist of 15 drum rhythm backing tracks by Barry Grueter on YouTube, titled Native Drum Backing Tracks. These tracks provide excellent practice tools, allowing you to immerse yourself in a rhythmic environment that complements the sound of your flute.
Remember, rhythm is as much about feeling as it is about precision. Allow yourself to relax into the patterns, enjoy the process, and let your creativity guide you. Every tap, beat, and note you play is a step toward deeper connection and expression with your flute.
